YORK STREET SEWER RELIEF   Houston, TX

Project consisted of the installation of 6,100 linear feet of gravity sewer line in downtown Houston. Microtunneling was used to drill 1,821 linear feet of 30" I.D. pipe and 3,379 linear feet of 24" I.D. pipe. This 6.6" pipe was manufactured by Mission Clay Pipe. Beneath two railroad spurs, 210 linear feet of 8-foot pipe (36" I.D.) was installed using microtunneling technology.

There were 20 separate drives on the project the longest being 415 linear feet and the shortest 156 linear feet. There were 10 drive pits and 10 receiver shafts. The depths ranged from 43 v.f. to 29 v.f

The soil conditions ranged from layered sandstone, to hard clay, to very fine wet sand. The depth of the tunnel below ground water averaged 15’. The line and grade deviations were 1.5" vertical and 6" horizontal.

In addition to the above conditions, 2,300 linear feet of the tunnel ran through lead contaminated soil; All soils, slurry and encountered groundwater were handled and disposed of by BIRDWELL.

BIRDWELL was the prime contractor on this project bonded to the City of Houston, and performed all microtunneling efforts with our own resources.
